As parents there are a vast amount of things we try to keep on top of with our children’s health and wellbeing. From developmental milestones, potty training and teething right the way through to that time when reception intake beacons (believe me it comes around far too fast!) we are always trying to do the best thing for them!
One thing that we can help with is the amount of sugar our children have. Easter is a tricky time for this as EVERYWHERE you look, from January onwards is about Easter eggs and chocolate treats! The British Dental Association recommends that if sugar and sweets are being consumed it is better to do so after a meal rather than as a stand alone snack and that the risk of tooth decay increases in proportion to the amount of sugar consumed (BDA, 2018). For children aged 4-6 years, the maximum recommended amount of sugar per day is 19g. Interestingly, for children under 4 years, there is no recommended limit but that it is better to avoid sugar sweetened drinks and snacks (NHS, 2020).
Now no one is saying to avoid chocolate at Easter (I for one will be enjoying a chocolate egg - if I get to it before the children!) However, moderation is important particularly with young babies and children and their developing teeth and gums. So how about considering an alternative to chocolate gifts?
